THE GOSPEL ACRONYM
This G.O.S.P.E.L. acronym is a literary device to teach the Good News. It provides a plain explanation of the Gospel for you and everyone with whom you share it. G-O-S-P-E-L spells “Gospel”, and there are many good ways to use those letters:
God’s Only Son Provides Everlasting Life.
God Offers Sinful People Eternal Life.
God’s Overwhelming Satisfying Powerful Everlasting Love.
Our Gospel acronym covers a little more ground than these examples. It’s a concise but detailed account of what the Bible says about salvation. You need to know it! So if you haven’t heard it yet, here’s your chance.
“G” IS FOR “GOD”
GOD created us for a relationship with Him.
He formed us in His image–with self-awareness, an eternal soul, and the capacity to love, create, and reason. We are here to glorify Him. That means He wants to show His goodness and power in and through us. We are supposed to be pointing back to Him as the source of it all.
“Bring My sons from afar and My daughters from the end of the earth, everyone who is called by My name, whom I created for My glory, whom I formed and made.” (Isaiah 43:6-7)
“O” IS FOR “OUR”
OUR sins separate us from God.
Picture His presence as a completely white house with a white carpet and white furniture. Sin defiles us–all of us. Our wrongdoings (defined by Him alone) are like spiritual dirt. We can’t enter His pure presence in this spiritually filthy condition. Essentially, our rebellion against God isolates us from Him in this life and the next.
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:2)
“S” IS FOR “SINS”
SINS cannot be excused, or removed by our own efforts.
People justify their own sins easily, but all sin is an offense to the holy God. Furthermore, it doesn’t just disappear or expire after a while. Likewise, we can’t tip the scales in our favor with “good works”. Sin brings due punishment on the sinner; it incurs a cost, which must be paid: death. It’s a debt that you owe; even if you could avoid incurring more debt, you would still owe the original debt.
“And I will send punishment on the world for its evil, and on the sinners for their wrongdoing; and I will put an end to all pride, and will make low the power of the cruel.” (Isaiah 13:11)
“P” IS FOR “PAYING”
PAYING the price for sin, Jesus Christ died and rose again.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He lived a sinless life on Earth, told us how to get right with God, and worked miracles in the world to demonstrate His authority. Then He allowed Himself to be crucified by sinners, though innocent. He died on the cross, was buried in a tomb, and rose to life three days later. His substitutionary death paid for us.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
“E” IS FOR “EVERYONE”
EVERYONE who trusts in Him alone has eternal life.
You’re a sinner, but Christ suffered for you. Believe this Gospel and turn to Him; call on Him as your Lord and Savior, and be saved. You can’t earn salvation or inherit it. No other person or practice can protect you from punishment or promise you peace. There is no other way to God; people are saved only by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone, to the glory of God alone.
“For, ‘Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ ” (Romans 10:13)
“L” IS FOR “LIFE”
LIFE with Jesus starts now and lasts forever.
Call on Christ and believe His Gospel to be saved instantly. God will write your name in His Book of Life, in permanent ink. Your sins will be forgiven for Christ’s sake, and you will become a son or daughter of the Most High. Begin to share your thoughts with Him, and He’ll hear you. Begin to bring your cares to Him, and He’ll help you. Meanwhile, as you depend on Him, He’ll guide you in His best plan for you, and He’ll mold your heart into one that reflects His glory. And when this brief life ends, you will go to be with Him for eternity, in the place He has reserved for you.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
